The Cloves Kingdom is the capital of the Cloves Territory, found in the middle of the once uninhabitable desert. The city is considered the most complex by design, as the whole city simultaneously acts as giant sundial. The layout of the city spirals up to the top, leading up to the Cloves Observatory and lookout point.

Unlike the other kingdoms, Cloves has no walls for protection against monsters. Instead, a moat that spans five feet wide surrounds the city. The moat feeds directly from the underground lake, causing it to burn anything on contact. There are several thin wooden bridges, spanning two feet wide, that allow persons to traverse to the city.

History

Prior to Ace events, the desert was never considered as inhabitable territory as the environment was harsh and, by general consensus, the Emerald Lake was considered too dangerous to go near. There have been some daredevils that have tried to swim in the lake, only to reach The End.

Ace

After traversing about Wonderland, Sham Kabala, along with Kraig E Odd settled in the desert to study the Emerald Lake and its properties. As the two of them were figuring the properties of the lake, curious Wonderlanders joined in causing a small settlement to form. Going through several tests and processes, Kraig concluded that the lake's property was close to that of sulfuric acid. Considering the various uses for the commodity, Sham named various personnel in order to process the now-dubbed Emerald Acid for practical use.

A structure was built over and around the Emerald Lake in order to limit direct access as a safety measure due to the lake's acidic properties. A library was even established in order to share whatever knowledge they found. Kraig invested most of his time to the library, making use of his photographic memory by transferring whatever he had into books. Sham was the opposite, creating several projects in order to push Wonderland into a more progressive era. This sparked an age of modernization for Wonderland and the city was established as "Cloves Kingdom"---the first established kingdom since the Vorpal Sonata.

As the city's construction reached completion, Sham was ready to take the next step: see if there were other places beyond Wonderland. From star maps to schematics, many plans were made. However, before construction for an airship could start, Penelope Brunale visited the kingdom under the pretense of establishing trade between Spades and Cloves. Colluding with Nightmare, she killed Sham and handed Kraig over to him. She soon established herself as the new ruler of Cloves.

As the new ruler, Penelope made the observatory at the top her castle and barred all the scholars from the library. She demanded them to pursue other forms of entertainment, leading to the development of various games based on probability and chance. She soon monopolized these games too, establishing game tokens as a form of currency. Those interested in accessing the Great Library had to earn a ridiculous amount of tokens in order to receive entry.

The twins, who had been rejected residence in Spades, were taken in by Penelope under the condition that they assist her at ruling the kingdom. Their first job: to cheat people out of their tokens. Although she had set the goal, she still did not want Sham and Kraig's scholars to have access to the library. The twins obliged to these terms and did what they could. In the end, some scholars were killed, others lost all they had, and the rest fled to Spades. Penelope considered chasing them down, but allowed the refugees amnesty due to her friendship with Ivan Abney, the current ruler of Spades.

As time passed, the original goal of gaining access to the Great Library was forgotten that Penelope no longer barred the public access. They were all focused on games---reaching a high score, earning the necessary tokens for daily necessities, developing new games to earn more tokens. Penelope was content.

Culture

Due to formerly being a capital of knowledge, various Latin terms have been weaved into the language. Penelope had considered correcting this during her rule, but refrained from doing so as she did not want to waste time on it. Instead she focused on ousting the top scholars. As a result, being knowledgeable is looked down on in the kingdom unless they had a high score to back them up. This has led to the few specialized schools to be shut down and the building used for other pursuits.

In Cloves Kingdom, having a high score is equivalent to having a lot of money as game tokens are used as currency. This leads many of the people to have a variety of recreational activities in order to achieve tokens outside of participating in games. The most common are spas, shops, and restaurants as Penelope is considered to be the biggest spender in the whole kingdom.

The architecture of Cloves are mostly made of stone with wood supports and plaster covering the outside. Majority of people decorate their houses in order to display their prestige. The most-sought display is the hot air balloon.

It is easy to tell who does well with games and who does not, as the scores are displayed for the whole kingdom to see. However, there is no mistreatment between those with a wide gap in scores due to the strict law enforcement, ensuring the populace remains at peace and loyal to their rulers.

Government

Formerly, Cloves Kingdom was considered to be a democracy, allowing lead scholars to have a say in the development of the kingdom. This all changed when Penelope took over, as she changed the government to a monarch to become the absolute ruler. She eventually sought help, giving the twins some political power for them to act accordingly to her wishes.

Law Enforcement

Dee & Dum are the only elite enforcers of Cloves Kingdom who work to capture, interrogate, and enforce order, supporting Penelope's regime and aiding in her plans. Their actions work in tandem with Penelope's foresight abilities as well as making use of hidden speaking tubes which were used during the construction of the kingdom.

Enforcement of the rules would vary from the loos of game tokens to torture. Going against Penelope's direct orders was against the law punishable by death.
